Burnout Prevention
Executive Burnout Prevention — before the company notices.
Stress management and burnout prevention for CEOs, managing directors and senior leaders: take the early warning signs seriously, manage the load, stay able to act. Confidential, in Vienna or online.
From the outside, a CEO looks functional for a long time. From the inside, functioning is often all that is left. This coaching starts while you are still at the wheel.
Load at C-level has its own dynamic
Leaders rarely burn out because they work too much. They burn out because three things coincide: constant availability that leaves no evening free; decision pressure that cannot be delegated; and the loneliness at the top that stops anyone noticing the exhaustion. People at the top do not show weakness — and that is exactly what makes the situation dangerous. The environment sees performance as long as the numbers hold. Nobody sees that the price rises every night.
Early warning signs leaders overlook
The signs are well known, but at this level they are readily dismissed as “a phase”:
- Sleep that does not restore — falling asleep works, staying asleep does not, and the mind is running numbers at four in the morning.
- Irritability towards people who never used to be an effort.
- Decisions postponed because the energy for their consequences is missing.
- Cynicism — about staff, about customers, about your own company.
- Withdrawal from private life: sport, friendships and family become negotiable.
- Physical signals you meant to have checked “after the quarter”.
Two or three of these over several weeks are no cause for panic, but they are a reason to look.
What coaching does — and what it does not
Coaching for burnout prevention works as long as you are still able to act. We clarify which pressures are structural — and can be changed through delegation, role clarity or a differently composed leadership team — and which lie in your own patterns: the insistence on deciding everything yourself; the inability to be unreachable. From that come concrete agreements with yourself, which we review in the following sessions.
What coaching is not: therapy. If the conversation shows signs of illness — depression, an anxiety disorder, manifest burnout — I say so openly and refer you to a doctor or to psychotherapy. That is not an ending but part of my responsibility; coaching can be useful alongside or afterwards.
Holistic means: not just talking
Exhaustion cannot be thought away. So coaching also addresses the basics that are sacrificed fastest at C-level:
- Sleep as a non-negotiable resource — and what you do when it fails.
- Exercise that goes into the calendar like a board meeting.
- Boundaries: availability rules you keep yourself — otherwise nobody else will.
- Delegation: what you genuinely must decide yourself, and what you only decide yourself out of habit.
It helps that I know the role: I led for 33 years and know how easily your own body gets pushed behind the next quarter.
Framework and confidentiality
One-to-one coaching, 50 to 90 minutes, in Vienna, in Leopoldsdorf near Vienna, or online; usually five to ten sessions every two to four weeks. Everything you say stays confidential — even when the company funds the coaching. Your employer learns that you are working on your resilience if you want it to, and never what we talked about.
Load does not stop at the office door. For private matters that surface in coaching, fuehldichwohl.wien offers psychosocial counselling in German. If the load comes mainly from the way the leadership team works together, leadership team supervision is often the more effective lever. The general framework is described on the Executive Coaching page.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Am I already burnt out, or “just” stressed?
That is better clarified in conversation than with a self-test. Roughly: stress is load that disappears after recovery. Burnout is the state in which recovery no longer works. If the latter is suspected, the first step is a doctor — coaching can accompany, but not replace, that.
Will my company find out?
Only if you want it to. If the company pays for the coaching, it knows the agreed goal — for instance “resilience and self-leadership” — and nothing about the content.
How quickly does burnout prevention take effect?
Emotional relief often sets in after the first few conversations — research shows this too (Künzli, 2005). Structural changes such as delegation, availability or the calendar take some weeks to hold. Expect five to ten sessions.
Can I do this online?
Yes. Under heavy load, not having to travel is an advantage in itself. I prefer to hold the first conversation in person — but it is not necessary.
